This Season Will Not Last Forever: December 3rd observations by Judy Howard-Peterson
A note from JCGL Executive Director, Jennifer Andersson:
So much has happened since Judy first posted this reflection, and yet, we find ourselves even deeper in the “not yet” that contemplation can offer a moment of respite and rescue in the midst of.
The geese have all tucked their heads under their wings. It’s what they do when the world around them gets cold and harsh. I tell them, “I wish I could do that, but I feel called to keep sticking my neck out.
The trees have all been stripped of their leaves and have entered into a season where productivity isn’t necessary. I do envy them. But when fascism doesn’t take a day off, neither can the resistance.
The snow blankets the ground providing cover for the voles. “Teach me your ways.” I say, “So that the vulnerable may move more freely in my presence.”
Two squirrels chase each other round and round the tree. I wonder, “What’s the point if you never get anywhere?” They didn’t let my cynicism get in their way. May it be so.
It’s been gray for days, yet the clouds seem unmoved. They invite me to trust that there is just as much light as there has always been. I do my best to believe them.
This year I let my garden age naturally and the Chickadees perch upon the stalks and nuthatches scavenge the seed pods. They seem grateful for what remains. I take a cue from them.
The wind howls and I wail in return. I think I heard, “I hear you.” And I say to her, “I know you blow where you will, but may I request that you use your power on behalf of the revolution.”
There was no reply. But one goose stuck her neck out. The trees stood strong. The snow sheltered. The squirrels played. The clouds parted for just a moment. The chickadees sang. And all creation seemed eager to re-mind me that this season will not last forever..
Contemplation to the rescue.
